The Utila Princess is a ferry that travels twice a day between the port of La Ceiba and Utila. It is commonly referred to as “the Utila ferry”. There are two watercraft used by the Utila ferry to transport people. They both have inside air-conditioned seating. The newest one is pictured below at Port in La Ceiba while preparing to travel to Utila, Honduras. Seating on the Utila Princess consists of long benches that run the length of the boat across the middle, as well as “diner booth” style seating with center tables, available on the port and starboard sides.
The ride is approximately one hour, depending on the weather. (Note: the one you see in the first picture is the newest one and is faster and better at handling the waves!) Arrive thirty minutes prior to departure time, except during busy times of the year such as Easter and Christmas, when you are better off arriving a good hour or more prior to departure time. You are permitted two pieces of luggage and one carry-aboard. The Utila Princess personnel are quite accommodating, and if you have more luggage, it is typically allowed, but they will charge you.
Make reservations if you have a large group.
Carry-aboard food items and non-alcoholic beverages are permitted. There is no food or drink sold on the Utila ferry.
A ticket on the Utila Princess costs 521 lempiras when traveling from Utila to La Ceiba. The price of a ticket on the Utila ferry when traveling from La Ceiba to Utila; however, is 542 lempiras. (Approximately $27 USD) The price difference is due to a departure/port tax when leaving from La Ceiba.
Children 6 to 12 years old travel at half price when with an adult, and children under 5 travel free when with an adult.

Those who have traveled to Utila via the ferry in the past may be surprised to note arrival at different location. Currently, the Utila dock is undergoing a rebuild, so the Utila Princess Ferry is no longer disembarking passengers at the center of town. Passengers will be arriving near “The Point” instead. Taxis are plentiful, and charge approximately 20 lempiras ($1 USD) per passenger to the center of town.
