Independence Day Celebrations

September 16, 2009

From the early morning hours, thousands of Hondurans joined various activities to commemorate the 188th anniversary of independence. The Governmental activities kicked off about six o'clock in the morning with the cry "Viva la Independencia", by the President of the Republic, Roberto Micheletti Bain, who opened the ceremony by the statue of our national hero, General Francisco Morazan, in downtown Tegucigalpa.

Student Parade Participants

President Micheletti was accompanied by his ministers, the President of Congress, Jose Alfredo Saavedra, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Jorge Rivera Aviles, the Mayor of Tegucigalpa, Ricardo Alvarez, and officers of the Armed Forces of Honduras, among other special guests. The Mayor of Tegucigalpa, before reading the Declaration of Independence of Central America (written on the 15th of September in 1821 by the Honduran national hero Jose Cecilio del Valle), called on his countrymen to vote in the upcoming General elections November 29th, whatever their political preference.

Celebrations were held in the capital's national stadium, where Hondurans enjoy presentations by military, police, and civil society, and about 25 private and public institutions that contributed to the parade. The Civic Democratic Union (UCD) joined with a massive presence in the parade that was developed with the participation of parents, who brought their children to teach them about the patriotic love to feel for our country. No doubt one of the most anticipated activities was the airshow. Planes of the Honduran Air Force crossed the sky, bringing loud applause from the audience, and several parachuters jumped in parachute's of white and blue.

President Micheletti said that on the day in Central America that commemorates the independence of the Spanish crown, "the Honduran people have shown the world that we are together and want this peace and tranquility." Speaking at the end of the parade, the President told reporters that the external interference that the country now suffers "makes us stronger, more determined to take this situation peacefully, but with the necessary seriousness. "We want the whole world hear that our people are independent, that our people are not overcome by anyone, and not influenced by anybody," he said.

Speaking to the Hondurans, President Micheletti asked that they "Keep calm, stick with peace, have faith and confidence in this government. Go to elections on November 29th, all Hondurans, no matter who you are going to vote for. Then on January 27th, we will deliver a new president popularly elected by the people."

Happy Independence Day!

This is the 188th year of celebrating Honduran Independence Day. The fight for independence was led by Francisco Morazan. On September 15, 1821, Spain granted independence to Honduras along with the rest of the Central American provinces. Two years later, the Federal Republic of Central America was created, but it disintegrated in 1838, and each state became independent.
