Following the official opening of the Copan Rio Amarillo airport there are growing expectations about the multiple benefits to the economy of the municipalities such as Copán Ruinas, that are already prepared to offer the best to tourists.
The President of the Chamber of Commerce and tourism in Copán Ruinas, Raúl Welchez, said that now that the airport is running it will stimulate economic growth.
“The Copán Ruinas Airport creates a wider market than you have now. Also we have proposed that a joint strategy between Gracias, Lempira and Copán Ruinas be implemented to attract tourism to the multiple tourism sites that both municipalities have to offer”.

Entrepreneurs have reported that in Copán Ruinas tourism has been depressed for years.

“Since 2009, the frequency of visits to the archaeological site has dropped 50%, hotel occupancy has fallen by 30%; However, we believe that by 2015 we will start to grow,” reported Welchez.

The airport, which will be managed by the Ministry of tourism, will provide options to interconnect Copan Ruinas to Roatán, Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, as well as Guatemala and El Salvador.

“We are hopeful that 2015 could be the year in which we achieve approval of the funding that would rebuild part of the highway from the Western regions of Honduras as well as also invest in reconstruction projects” stated Welchez.
