The Decades Old Dream for Copán Ruins Airport in Honduras Begins Today!


Río Amarillo, Copán, Honduras – Airport Opens.

For more than thirty years copanecos” have dreamed of having their very own airport and make the promotion of this historic  Mayan route a reality. Today that dream officially announced in April of 2014 became reality as Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez inaugurates the Rio Amarillo Copan Ruinas International airport which can accommodate aircraft carrying up to 100 passengers once phase two is completed. Today as Phase one is completed aircraft accommodating up to 46 passengers will begin serving the Copan Airport with an initial schedule of three flights a week plus many many charter flights.

Inaugurating the airfield which has a 1,400 meter landing field will allow the momentum of tourism in the area to rapidly grow.

Since 2008 the entire region of the country has felt a prolonged and agonizing impact of  low presence of tourists and commerce.  Prior to 2008 over 180 thousand visitors were arriving; an amount that dropped considerably down to barely 100 thousand visitors per year.
Despite the losses to the Copan Ruinas tourist industry residents, tourism businesses the local chamber of commerce many determined combatants fought and overcame many barriers. Now with the today’s inauguration of their very own International aerodrome the realization for the dream begins to come true. An improvement to the current economic situation, which beyond boosting the tourism sector will also impact many small entrepreneurial businesses that have already integrated and prepared to be part of the many  offerings tourists who arrive to explore the Mayan city and local culture.

“Today we see with hopes that this project will bring us European, North and South American as well as more regional tourism. There are tour operators from Guatemala who began tests flights to the Copan Airport yesterday as well as local CM Airways in order to handle the weekly flights that will provide service to this terminal, just as the cruise ship industry did for the Bay Island of Roatan  Raúl Welchez, President of the Chamber of Commerce and tourism of Copan Ruinas.

A dream come true for many many years!

 

So far the tourism enterprise leaders and pioneers have given airlines many approaches and ideas for travel, from within Honduras and Guatemala. Flights will be scheduled from Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula and Roatan.

So far, airlines and charter plane operators have committed to at least three flights a week.

On Tuesday  March 10th, President Juan Orlando Hernandez inaugurated the Copan airfield at Rio Amarillo leading the way to a new Tourism and Economic boom for the Copan Ruinas bonanza.

On par with the commissioning of the airfield, the project is complemented by a security plan that takes the model implemented in Roatan Bay Islands, Honduras as the basis to ensure that every tourist who comes to the area may explore with the utmost confidence and have security guarantees.

“The Copan Ruins area at the direction of the Honduran Minister of National Security and the formal request by Raúl Welchez a direct descendant of the pioneering “Welchez” family who started out with the “Hotel Marina Copan” which began as a Bed and Breakfast operation run by “Mom” for the various early explorers who discovered and made the Copan Archeological Ruins reality; An increased presence of tourism police from the current 10 permanently assigned to the area to 45, and it is expected that with the implementation of the new Copan airport airfield the permanent National Police presence may rise to 70.

The plan includes safety infrastructures throughout all the urban area, the archaeological acropolis known as “Copan Ruins” or “Copan Ruinas” and the perimeter where tourists will travel to and from the new Rio Amarillo Copan Airport“.

There are only a short 18 kilometers of road which will serve tour operators and tourists arriving on different flights, and every possible effort is being put in place to secure the area. Along with today’s March 10th 2015 Inauguration of the Copan Rio Amarillo airport are the grand opening of tourism facilities and offices where there will be a strict control of Honduran military and national police officers to ensure security for the visitors.

Other projects have simultaneously been prepared for the grand opening of the Copan Ruinas airport.

Parallel to the massive project of building the airfield, a actively joint group composed of the National Honduran Government sector, The Mayors of Santa Rita de Copan as well as the town of Copán Ruinas. These entities will work in conjunction with the local chambers of Commerce who will prioritize projects that will accommodate the additional demand of increased visitors who will begin gradually arriving to enjoy the splendor and archaeological wonders of Copan.

Accompanying the expansion of the increased tourism sector; are efforts to increase and maintain the beauty of the historic Mayan Archaeological Park “Copan Ruins” and the health and sanitation infrastructures in order to provide the utmost comfort of services being offered to the new influx of visitors which is expected to more than triple rapidly.

Another plan has been put in place to continuously maintain the roads connecting the airfield to the various attractions available to enjoy a complete safe and secure tourist corridor which is also be dependent on the road being in good condition at all times.
Already in place is a ruling that prohibits the use of this important road by heavy equipment and other transportation vehicles such as Semi-Tractor trailers along the core area.
The President of the Chamber of Commerce Mr. Juan Angel Welchez stated that “It is important that theDEI” (The Honduran version of the IRS or tax control department)  properly control the flow of the customs area located nearby. Thus prolonging the expected life and proper conditions of the roads serving the area.

The goal is that at least in the first year the new flow of tourists which visit Copán Ruinas rises at least 25%. “We hope that the flights also serve to promote the many artisans whose handicrafts made locally by micro-entrepreneurs and creation of tours to and from the Bay Island of Roatan as well as many other cities. The Copan airfield provides is a large range of opportunities for all”.

A group created by various sectors of business, tourism and government has planned the expansion projects including infrastructure, sanitation and health.
The NEW Copan Airport officially opens today March 10th, 2015. The beginning of a new era not just for Copan Ruinas but the country of Honduras as a whole.
