Nestled between Pico Bonito and Nombre de Dios National Parks, the Cangrejal River Valley offers the perfect setting for an outstanding active adventure or eco tourism experience. The Cangrejal River is located within Destination Atlantida, and flows into the coastal city of La Ceiba, on the Caribbean Coast of Honduras.
Getting to the Cangrejal River Valley is extremely easy! An old, all weather dirt road that leads up from La Ceiba into the mountain communities follows the river. Almost immediately you will become aware of incredibly lush mountains covered with truly dense tropical rainforests. How can an area so close to a medium sized city like La Ceiba be so pristine? Different people will give you different answers, but the fact is that it is truly beautiful! Within 6 miles (10 km.) from La Ceiba, you will find an area that is truly spectacular. Lush green mountains, a river with blue green waters that rush through building sized boulders on their race to the nearby Caribbean Sea; waterfalls dropping up to 200 feet down the canyon… Is this paradise or what?
The spectacular natural setting is not alone, nestled within the forests or next to the river, you will find a variety of small lodges and boutique hotels, that offer all of the peace and quiet of nature, and yet the opportunity for an exciting active adventure experience paddling down the class III and IV whitewaters of the Cangrejal River, descending hidden waterfalls within the tropical rainforests, or horseback riding though local communities and jungle trails.
There are several different trails that lead into the parks, perhaps the most exciting of all is the El Mapache trail, that leads you up to El Bejuco Waterfall, a unique 200 foot waterfall that can be seen from the dirt road. Access to the trails is through a magnificent 120 foot long suspension bridge that will take you high across the river into Pico Bonito National Park.
Your best bet is to stay within one of the different lodges within the Cangrejal River. The award winning La Villa de Soledad B&B is probably the best option. Not only are they within walking distance to most activities within the Cangrejal River Valley, they also offer some of the nicest rooms around, with original Honduran art, a direct access to a porch with your own personal hammock, and a magnificent view of the Cangrejal River Valley.
If you have never been to the Cangrejal River Valley, do yourself a favor, and save at least a couple of days in your upcoming vacation to the Bay Islands and spend them at the valley. If you are an expat living in Roatan or Utila, then make sure that you plan on a night or two in the Cangrejal River Valley during your next trip to La Ceiba.
