Tela Facts

Tela is located about an hour and a half drive from San Pedro Sula from the east, or an hour and a half west from La Ceiba. It is considered one of the premier beaches in all of Honduras, and the debate is on between Trujillo and Tela as to which has the "best" beach. One thing for sure is that Tela can claim to be the most popular beach on the north coast of Honduras. It is the favorite for both local Hondurans and tourists alike.

Tela was once headquarters for the United Fruit company, who besides being in the banana trade, formed the Tela Railroad Company (the railroad connected San Pedro Sula and La Ceiba), as well as headquarters for Standard Fruit Company, both of which were responsible for the early development and original infrastructure of the entire country. Tela shows many remnants of the "foreign" culture that once lived there with white picket fences along the seaside cottages. A favorite get-a-way for those of both companies, now Tela is host to many world-wide tourists, and the selected home of the new "Bahia de Tela Project". This project includes building a very large array of tourist attractions such as chain hotels like Hilton, Marriott, and Desire, and a world class golf course. The area is expected to compete directly with Cancun, Mexico tourism, and an international airport is also in its future.

There are currently many very nice hotels and restaurants with fresh seafood and typical Honduran and Garifuna recipes to enjoy. The beach is large, and offers swimming, water sports, and just lounging around, in and out of the water.

Nearby you can visit Lancetilla Botanical Gardens just south of town. The garden includes plants and trees from around the globe. Those interested in Honduran Birds, bird watchers, and those who are enchanted by orchids will thoroughly enjoy the visit to Lancetilla.
