San Lorenzo FactsAlthough it is not the capital, San Lorenzo's populated port is the city that most thrives in the southern Department of Valle. At the level of municipality, San Lorenzo gets much of its revenues from the port activity, the cultivation of white shrimp, agricultural products such as melons and watermelons, and also other items such as the extraction of salt and fishing. A little more than one hundred kilometers to the South of Tegucigalpa, the center of the municipality is located along the Pan-American Highway (known as CA 1). San Lorenzo is a relatively young city. While the Spanish founded it in the first quarter of the 16th century, it was not until the first decade of the last century when the municipality was created. The city had grown to an estimated 27,000 inhabitants in 2009 according to the World Gazetteer, and is in the process of urban reorganization. In less than five years, it has paved the majority of its streets, built a new modern municipal market that is amazingly clean, almost totally re-modeled their hospital, and opened up a surprising amount of public spaces.
