The Mestizo Reef was created by Posada del Sol and the Guanaja Foundation, a nonprofit environmental and community enhancement organization established by
Posada after the hurricane MITCH as a tribute to the island of Guanaja and its community.

Mestizo Reef commemorates the rich and colorful history of Guanaja and its fusion of European and Indian cultures. It was Posada del Sol’s desire to capture that history and turn it into a permanent memorial for the enjoy of both locals and visitors alike.

The site is located in 65ft of water and consists of two life-size busts, Christopher Columbus and Lempira; and shipwreck replicas, including two Spanish cannons and a 16th century bell.

Mestizo Reef was inaugurated by President Ricardo Maduro on July 30, 2001 to commemorate the meeting between Christopher Columbus and the local Indians, 500 years ago. It was Columbus who christened Guanaja "Isla de los Pinos" (Island of the Pines).

around the Bay Islands off the northern coast, to explore Pico Bonito National Park or to see the Mayan ruins of Copan, one of the top archaeological sites in Central America..."
