Juanita’s Bread with beans, butter, eggs and cream best known as “los panes de La Bolsa”, is perhaps Tegucigalpa’s most famous breakfast snack. Dating back to 1954, this little entrepreneurial hub has never stopped making these so simple, yet delicious staple Tegucigalpa treats.
Mercedes Fonseca owns “Panes de la Bolsa” in Barrio La Bolsa. Inherited from her mother, Mercedes runs this amazingly successful restaurant now 60+ years young and still going strong; where you can either order the famous rolls and pick them up or dine in.
Most mornings a Tegucigalpa Engineer escapes from the office, to satisfy his food addiction, which consist in enjoying two hot and crispy rolls, stuffed with fried beans, butter, egg, with coffee along with hot sauce.
Some patrons make lines outside right before it opens, whilst others place orders from offices all over the city.
This is how it goes down:
“Good morning four rolls please.”.
“Normal or egg?”
“Something to drink?”
“No thank you very much.”
“44 Lempiras please.”
“But please do not mention my name and take my picture, because I could lose my job; the customer requested while enjoying his favorite dish in a corner of the room.
The engineer by trade is a regular customer, along with countless others, the traditional business Panecillos Juanita “Juanita Rolls ” which has just achieved 60+ years of operation in the neighborhood known as “La Bolsa”, Comayagüela a twin city to the capital of the country; Tegucigalpa.
Over three generations have run the place, Panecillos Juanita has become a kind of gastronomic mecca for hundreds of hungry Honduran pilgrims who take refuge there to start the day with well placed batteries, as they say.
A Bit about: Panecillos Juanita
Alexis Andino is in charge of the business. “This is a traditional food of Tegucigalpa and costs very little money. The best thing is that the rolls are ” Catracho” or should we say “Honduran” he related as he smiled with satisfaction.
Grandmother Mercedes Fonseca began selling the tasty breads. Then followed her daughter Juanita (whose name baptized the business) and today, her granddaughter Mercedes has the baton. Three exemplary women.
Perhaps attracted by the smell of fried beans and good service, to this humble dining in passing have come Ministers, Congress Members, Businessmen, Officials and ordinary people; they all leave satisfied.
Since many workers do not have the luck this engineer has to escape from his place of work – many send to purchase their rolls satisfy their daily desire.
“Panecillos Juanita” Always open Monday to Saturday where loyal clients queue up in line to enjoy these famous Honduran Rolls.
The menu of this famous business is based nothing more and nothing less than on bread and beans, butter and egg.
“The main secret to this Traditional Honduran Food is the “Touch of Hot Spices” we use in the beans”
noted Mercedes. Simple breads that are loaded with beans, butter and eggs are offered. These rolls may accompany fresh Honduran Coffee or a “Fresco” (Soda Pop).
“Years ago we decided to add to the menu baleadas, catrachas and other typical meals; but that did not go well, as customers only wanted the rolls; which is why we only offer the we have, our famous Panecillos”
Several people want to eat in the business to escape their hectic routines, others opt for take out food, and others call for home delivery
“Home delivery has been offered the past five years, this has proven to be a good result since many of our patrons are people who have very busy lives and do not have time to come to the shop to enjoy our rolls,” Mercedes relayed.
