South County Orthopedic Specialists is a 10-member orthopedic group with each doctor having a subspecialty in sports medicine, hand surgery, foot surgery, spine surgery and joint replacements. Gersten is specializing in joint replacement surgery, especially hip and knee, and also performs shoulder surgeries.
Larry Gersten knew as a young boy that he wanted to follow in his parents’ footsteps.
His father, Hilliard, was an anesthesiologist and his mother, Sylvia, a nurse. After graduating from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia – his father’s alma mater – he attended USC and did his orthopedic residency at Los Angleles County-USC Hospital. In 1988, he began working at Saddleback Hospital and has since been with the South County Orthopedic Specialists. Today, he serves as the medical director of the Saddleback Hospital Joint Replacement Program.
When his daughter, Allie, was a senior the two went on a week-long, school-organized medical mission to Honduras through the Global Brigade, a national charity organization that sends volunteers to help underprivileged people.
Gersten ran a volunteer medical clinic in Honduras where he saw about 100 patients a day. The patients came from far and wide, as this was the only week that year that a medical team would be in their village.
“The patients were very appreciative,” he said. “My daughter and I gained new respect for what we have and how little people around the world have, but can still be happy and lead productive lives.”
