CITY HALL MARCHES TOWARD RECONSTRUCTION
The Municipal Corporation of San Pedro Sula inmediately reacted to the arrival of hurricane Mitch to our country. The citizens were alerted so they could take preventive measures looking for refuge in safe places. An emergency plan was executed to habilitate 250 shelters with the purpose to receive people who lived in high risked areas.

City Hall had been working on the river channel drainage system and also with cleaning and making stronger its bridges and borders. This allowed the excess water to flow without overboarding, avoiding a major tragegy.

The cleaning unit which the Environmental Offices count with, and also the equipment of the Municipal Engineering Offices, worked in the evacuation and rescuing of people that were in danger.

The Fire department executed labors of heroic rescues. And also the medical brigades, paramedics, odontologists, nurses, and volunteer personnel worked non-stop soothing the pain of the people affected.

The labors directed by the Municipal Board of water and DIMA went beyond rehabilitating people and transfering food, water and supplies to the shelters.

Every single moment the Municipal Emergency Comitee (CODEM) worked side by side with CODER and COPECO seeking solutions to the problems of the present crisis. Together with the National Electric Company , the Enviromental Offices worked strenously removing the fallen trees that blocked the streets and the river channels, and also the ones that represented a risk for the people.

With the support of the College of Engineers and Arquitechs it was possible to give immidiate solutions at the most crucial moments of the structural damages that the bridges and the borders of the rivers presented. Thanks to the above, San Pedro Sula did not loose any of its bridges.

The collaboration of all enterprises through the Industrial Chamber of Comerce of Cortes and the Honduran Maquila Association and also the colaboration of all the community of San Pedro Sula, participated in taking food, medicine and clothing to almost 60,000 people located in shelters.

At this moment, the Municipal Corporation is conducting a global evaluation of the damages caused by the hurricane with the purpose to complete the reconstruccion plan. Right now there exist various prioritary actions like the creation of macro-shelters, in which there would be sheltered only those people that do not have the possibility of returning to there old home or that lost everything. Here they would impose the system of " Food for Work ", so the sheltered join in the labors of cleaning and other tasks the San Pedro Sula Municipality is conducting, and in exchange for rations of food and other articles.

The reconstruction of roads, intense cleaning labors and the repairment of clean water, sewer systems and rain water are a priority to City Hall at these very moments.

The recuperation labors are just starting, but thanks to the solidarity of the San Pedro Sula community we are sure that this ardous task of reconstruction will be completed with honor and dignity.
