The 2015 Mesoamerican Reef Report Card, available online at: www.healthyreefs.org, emphasizes that Roatan has the healthiest reefs throughout the region. The Report Card is based on the study of 248 coral reef sites along 1,000 kilometers of the Caribbean coasts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras.
On Tuesday May 13th 2015, the international organization Healthy Reefs presented the health status of the great Mesoamerican reef to the Honduras Government. Ian Drysdale, Coordinator for Honduras Healthy Reefs emphasized that, “You have to hold that Honduras has the best reef health of the four countries. Honduras reefs have the highest biomass of herbivorous fish of the region and Roatan came as the subregion with the better quality of the Mesoamerican reef.”
He also stressed that Tela has been a nice surprise as the reefs found in the Bay of Tela, “are stunning, with live coral cover that has no comparison” and praised the work of local governments to ensure that the area in question has been declared a protected marine area.
