La feria de la Amistad (The Friendship Fair) is all about friends getting together and having a good time. Hondurans as well as tourists come to La Ceiba for two weeks to enjoy parties held at different venues every day. Large Honduran corporations spend countless amounts of time and money to have full crews arrive before, and stay after, just to move their stages and help present the many bands that participate from “barrio to barrio” or (neighborhood to neighborhood) every single day.
Hotels are packed, restaurants and bars are packed mainly by those who choose to watch the event live on TV. Peoples homes are packed with family, friends, as well as complete strangers they just met at Carnival. Trust me, I know, we used to live on one of the main streets in a neighborhood that is privileged to host a “Carnavalito”. Our home was packed every year and yes that included people we had just met. Many who remain friends till this day. After all it is called the “Friendship Fair”. (Note, If you did not make reservations for a place to stay months ago, good luck and time to get out there and meet people! Maybe they will let you get some rest on their couch unless of course it is already taken Not to mention the fact that this year Carnival coincides with Mother’s Day! Yikes )
The festivities begin on Saturday evening but many entrepreneurs as well as just every day people have over the past few years started the party early by UN-officially setting up their own parties all over town including complete neighborhoods.
Think of it as Bourbon Street in New Orleans moving from one street to another every day. Street vendors also go through the meticulous process of setting up, taking done and moving their push carts, food trucks and other vehicles as well as home made stands along with the fancy ones. It is a tireless job for those who sponsor as well as participate at Carnival since the municipality and the tourism chamber have strict rules about clearing everything up including garbage by 6:00 AM each day and moving on to the next venue. Each event is referred to as “Carnavalito”! (Small carnival)
Those who come to have a good time by renewing old friendships as well as the thousands of tourist who come from all over the world get maybe a few hours of sleep every day for two weeks. Those who are working the event get very little if any rest.
What all this means is that it is a world renowned party venue that each year attracts various countries to add their own parade floats similar to what you would see at Macy’s Parade in New York. Elaborate floats participate from countries as far away as Brazil, Japan, Jamaica the USA and the list keeps growing. Even the city of New Orleans participates at the Gran Carnaval de La Ceiba.
The fair culminates on the last day with a huge parade that takes almost all day which includes, the horses first because they have been hanging around for hours before the actual start and sometimes the heat is unbearable; so have to get them back in the shade as soon as possible. Then come the kids, yup kids, have to get them back in the shade also as soon as possible as they are all wearing elaborate fair type costumes.
Then come the Naval forces with their marching band as well as various displays including a float later on. (Don’t they look good in those white uniforms, ladies? LOL
Many of the Naval and army forces who have spent hours waiting their turn put on a show march up San Isidro street and then get to work immediately protecting the general public as well as the thousands of tourist who arrive. Including sometimes the President of the country riding a horse.
The start of the parade is triggered by four Honduran Air Force F5 fly over. (Honduras can not afford F16’s F18’s or for sure not F35’s
Following this come the many marching bands from various schools both within Honduras as well as foreign. Then come the motorcycles and many just marching down the street Carnival craving aficionados.
Followed by the major event; the floats include sponsors, large corporations, NGO’s the Red Cross and those elaborate floats brought from countries far away. (Side note the Infant Queen is also on the first float out as she too has to most likely take a nap after participating in each and every event of the Carnival for two solid weeks) The remainder of the various beauty queens selected to represent the annual fair all roll down the street in many elaborate floats.
Some companies as well as private citizens pay the fees to be a part of the parade just to have fun being a part of the party.
This is the party of the year in Central America, you have to be there to appreciate it and we would like to thank all those who have worked and continue to do so every year to put on a show that YOU will never forget.
So get some good rest, and then come to La Ceiba and party for two weeks! Trust me, you will need lots and lots of water to keep hydrated. You will never be at a loss for what to dine on, as there is food everywhere, including on streets that are not part of the continuing changing venues. People in the neighborhoods who own houses along the route sometimes have their own parties in their front yards and or homes that last the entire event.
All in all, it is about being with friends and having a great time together. What are you waiting for? Come to the La Ceiba Carnival 2015, the biggest event in the Country of Honduras – every year.
