Honduras vs Panama Video Highlights

Game Re-Cap!

Panama took the lead against Honduras in the 21st minute when Luis Tejada scored from a executed play.

Honduras played very strong in the last 30 minutes of the game and in the 78th minute Andy Najar was tripped inside the penalty area. The spot of the fowl, created a ruckus between the players. It took the referee a full three minutes to restore order.

Andy Najar’s penalty attempt was deviated into the goal post by Panama goalie Jaime Penedo but the ball rebounded back to Najar, who easily tapped it in for the score. He then celebrated with a backflip.

There was further drama in the 84th minute when Panama’s Abdiel Arroyo was fouled just outside the penalty area and the referee awarded a free kick.

Panama’s players again protested and were lucky to avoid a red card as they made clear contact with the referee.

Even the final whistle did not signal the end of their complaints as they continued to argue with the referee.

Honduras faces a must win game vs Haiti in order to continue on in the 2015 Gold Cup.

Honduras currently has 10 points, 2 more than Mexico. A victory over Panama would almost ensure Honduras at least the playoff spot, and place it extremely close to an automatic spot to the World Cup. Earning all 3 points against Panama could very well be the deciding factor that pushes Honduras through to the World Cup in Brazil during 2014. The Honduran team will be unable to clinch on Tuesday, but will put itself one win away from qualifying if it wins and Mexico loses against the United States. However, a loss to Panama combined with a Mexican win over the United Stated could potentially put Honduras back into fourth place with only two games remaining.

Panama has not won any of its last four matches, including its last home game against Jamaica, a 0-0 draw that cost them 2 very easy points. Panama currently sits in fifth place with 7 points. If Panama were to lose against Honduras, any chances of finishing in the top 3 spots would be gone, and the Canaleros would be reduced to playing Mexico at the Estadio Azteca for the playoff spot. Panama is in fifth place in the CONCACAF HEXAGONAL  table. The team has seven points in seven games and is one point behind Mexico for the playoff spot. If Panama manages a win against Honduras and Mexico loses against the United States, then the Panamanians would climb to third place; a win would guarantee them at least a -1 goal differential instead of the -2 they currently have. Meanwhile, Honduras would drop from even to -1; Panama won the first encounter between the two teams and would win the head-to-head tiebreaker with a win on Tuesday.  Panama has no other option than to win the match against Honduras, any other result will not allow Panama a shot at the top three spots in the Hexagonal.

The Honduras vs Panama match will be televised live on beIN Sport on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at 9:00 Eastern 8:00 PM Central 7:00 PM Mountain time and 6:00 PM Pacific.
