CONCACAF: SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras vs Cuba – Cuba’s Raycharle Herrera struck in the 78th minute to give Cuba (0-1-1, 1 point) a 1-1 draw with Honduras (1-1-0, 4 points) in a Group A match at the 2015 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship on Monday night March 3, 2015.
The 17-year-old midfielder drilled home a 23-yard free kick to offset Foslyn Grant’s strike early in the second half at the Estadio Francisco Morazan.
The result provided Cuba with its first point of the competition, while host Honduras (1-1-0, 4 points) remains undefeated after two games.
Grant put the Seleccion Catracha ahead 1-0 in the 49th minute, when goalkeeper Lazaro Garcia could not handle a long-range shot. As the ball popped up, the opportunistic Motagua forward headed home from six-yards out.
Cuba pushed for an equalizer and its efforts were rewarded after Serguey Campillo was fouled near the penalty arc. Several players hovered over the ball, before Herrera fired a bullet past goalkeeper Michael Perello into the upper right corner to draw the Caribbean
Both sides had opportunities to add to their goal totals.
Honduras midfielder Jorge Alvarez sent a volley over the crossbar in the 16th minute off a right-wing feed from Kevin Castro. On the half hour, forward Darixon Vuelto headed a 12-yard effort over the net and then forced Garcia to make a diving save of his free kick in the 60th minute.
Jansiel Blanco had Cuba’s best chance of the opening half, but sent his shot wide right following a corner kick.
Honduras will meet Jamaica (1-0-1, 3 points) on Thursday, while Cuba faces Trinidad & Tobago (0-0-2, 0 points) the same day.
Thanks to a 2-0 victory over Trinidad earlier, the United States (2-0-0, 6 points) ended the evening atop the Group A table.
