Honduras is saddened by the murder of a Canadian citizen that was vacationing in our country. The victim, Themy Alexandre Vallee Apostalaski, had been in Honduras several days, and was spending the last days of his vacation in Roatan. The murder is likely to hit international press, especially in Canada where the victim lived, and will likely have repercussions in the already struggling tourism industry of Honduras.
Themy had spent several days in Honduras, including the port city of La Ceiba where he enjoyed the Cangrejal River and Pico Bonito National Park, before heading towards Roatan. As a member of the Under Cover Law Enforcement Unit of the Canadian Fisheries Department in Vancouver, he was properly trained and evidently knew how to take care of himself. There is no doubt that being a police officer that works in a big city, close to a border, you are used to difficult situations and have developed a sixth sense as far as being aware of danger. So what happened?
According to the information I ( John Dupuis, President of the La Ceiba Chamber of Tourism )have had access to, Themy was in a bar in a truly rough neighbourhood in Roatan, in the town of French Harbour. If you were to look for the closest thing to a crack abusing ghetto in Roatan, you would look here. The bar, known as La Curva (the curve) is located deep into this neighbourhood, with only one street leading out of it. The street is not paved, not well lit, actually very dark, and at least ¼ of a mile from the main road, and you would have to walk that distance to get a cab. The bar is frequented mainly by locals, and does not cater to tourists. In fact, I can almost bet on the fact that Themy was the only tourist there. Surely most of the other patrons at the bar where rough, though honest good meaning citizens, but the bar is also frequented by rift raft crack abusers and probably underworld characters who are not law abiding citizens.
It is evident that Themy Alexandre was having a good time during his vacation, and got carried away while doing so. By ending up at a local bar that does not cater to tourists in a rough part of the island he put himself at risk unnecessarily, and unfortunately paid with his life by doing so. Themy did not use his common sense to stay away from risk, and probably was overconfident of his ability to stay away from danger because of his Under Cover Law Enforcement training. His death is a sad reminder that we all put ourselves at risk unnecessarily.
The good news is that the police department has already apprehended one suspect and is after the other. The new chief of police, General Bonilla has been working hard to upgrade and professionalize the national police of Honduras and we are confident that the suspects will be tried and if found guilty, put behind bars. We will not tolerate having tourists harmed in Honduras.
