DIVERSIFICATION

The main objective of this program is to identify and develop crops and/or species that may represent alternatives to traditional agriculture. The emphasis is towards crops with export potential or profitable substitution of imports that may be produced locally by small and medium sized farms.

The Diversification Program has provided technological support to producers in different export crops and presently analyzing various successful products in the international markets including: mangoes, citrus fruits, tabasco chile, ginger and black pepper. FHIA is presently working with crops that produce an edible root like yucca and malanga and with other exotic tropical fruits.

There are already local Honduran producers employing technological processes in their plantations cultivating mangoes and black pepper. The Program maintains a greenhouse where FHIA is developing species that are resistant to diseases and pests. This greenhouse already has citrus plants, mangoes, avocados, guanábanas, black pepper, passion fruit and other exotic tropical fruits that are available for sale to the general public.
