The Demonstrative Agricultural and Forestry Center for Humid Tropical Plants (CADETH):

The Demonstrative Agricultural and Forestry Center for Humid Tropical Plants
The Demonstrative Agricultural and Forestry Center for Humid Tropical Plants (CADETH), is a project financed by the Honduran-Canadian Environmental Fund. Its execution is supported by the Development of the Latifoliado Forest (PDBL) and the Agricultural-Forestry Project CATIE/GTZ. The Center is located near La Masica, Atlántida, in the basin of the Cuero River, with 98 hectares of land that is a part of the protected area of the National Park Pico Bonito.

The center's main objective is to develop and certify sustainable agricultural/forestry production systems for small and medium sized producers located in humid tropical areas in order to reduce the agricultural pressures on the forests and reduce the ongoing deforestation caused by farmers cutting down trees to plant crops.

The center will also develop and support technologies that will be transferred to projects, institutions and non governmental organizations (NGOs) that are interested not only in agriculture and forestry, but also in conserving and sustainable managing of general interest resources including soil, water, and genetic plants that are adaptable to the area.

The project plans to maintain on its premises or in cultivated parcels, some 500 native and foreign species including wood producing species in order to produce seeds.

Presently, agricultural and forestry systems have been established for wood producing species that traditionally are not used as shade for cocoa and coffee, as well as improved banana species such as FHIA-01, FHIA-03 and FHIA-21.

The center's infrastructure consists of an office, conference center, dining room and bedrooms for 36 people. Soon it will have the necessary equipment to develop intensive training programs for producers, technicians, and forestry/agricultural students.
