WE ARE A PARENTS ASSOCIATION THAT WANT TO SHARE WHAT WE HAVE IN COMMON, OUR EXPERIENCES WITH DOWN SYNDROME.

All of us have lived through moments of doubt and of the rewarding gratification of having at home a child with Down syndrome. We have learned that they are persons with an interior world that is very intense and marvelous, rather than causing us any trouble, they have enriched our lives with their special way of being. We also learned that they have an amazing capacity to adapt themselves and learn. There is much we can do to help them to integrate with the community and it’s norms.

We know that there are many homes with children and adults affected by Down syndrome that need orientation and support. We believe that the best way to do accomplish this is by sharing personal experiences and mutual knowledge. This non profit foundation was created by parents for parents of Down syndrome children and adults on August 15 of 1998, so that we can share experiences and acquire the knowledge that will allow down syndrome children to be integrated and have a place in the community. Parents will be taught how to provide their child rules for their adaptation and promote family unity. The community will be made aware of the need to accept and support Down syndrome citizens.

WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF THE FOUNDATION?

The foundation´s primary goal is to create the necessary conditions to achieve the adaptation of the individual with Down syndrome by overcomming his limitations and thereby achieving an adequate social integration.

foto5t It is important to underscore that the physical and psychological necessities of individuals with Down syndrome are the same as that of any other person. All humans strive for physical integration, good health, good nutrition, cleanliness and personal hygiene, love and attention and social acceptance.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN PROJECTS OF THE FOUNDATION ?

Like all beginnings especially in activities like ours, where the entire project depends on the personal efforts of it’s members, the foundation starts with a great amount of will power and a firm commitment to give life to projects. The highest priority is given to those projects that we consider will contribute in an immediate and positive way to our goals regarding Down syndrome.

The initial projects are:

  • Create our own informative trimestrial newletter.
  • Individual programs of stimulation and education, organized in level and stages, in order to facilitate the integration in normal schools.
  • Education program directed to provide knowledge and develop abilities in young adults. The goal is for them to learn a job skill and achieve their independence.
  • Programs that will train and inform teachers and other persons of normal schools.
  • Promote and provide support for the formation of chapters throughout the Republic of Honduras.

WHAT ARE THE NEEDS OF THE FOUNDATION ?

We are a non-profit organitation and are financed entirely thru donations. Funds are also obtained through special gifts and donations from parents and institutions, selling souvenirs including t-shirts, pins and logo keychains and through a series of other activities designed to obtain funds.

You can be a member of the foundation through different ways:

  • Professionals provide training and counseling.
  • Businesses can donate products or services for special events or an annual or monthly sum in cash.
  • Volunteers offer their time by planning, organizing and developing special events. Or they contribute by simply purchasing articles with our logo.

We presently do not have an office. We need a place equipped to work where meetings can be held and a place to provide service and attention to the families that request assistance, and where we will operate the administrative functions including the elaboration and diffusion of all the acquired information and activities.

We are five hard working mothers that are pushing this project to make it a reality. We are currently functioning out of the house of Lucy Mora de Kawas, in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
