You might find it attributed to Sitting Bull or other famous Indians, but it would be bull to make a guess.

As a child I heard it first on TV, maybe on "The Lone Ranger" or a western movie. I believe it to be cliche before then... at least by the 1950's.

Tonto is purported to have said "I think paleface speak with forked tongue" in the first episode of "The Lone Ranger."

The term forked tongue is possibly from the split tongue of a snake and likely originated in Asia.
