Andy Martin Cayman Cowboy to perform in Bay Islands of Utila – Honduras

Andy Martin Cayman Cowboy to perform in Bay Islands of Utila Honduras on June 16th 2013

Cayman’s Cowboy Andy Martin is scheduled for a performance on the island of Utila, Honduras on 16 June, 2013.

There is a very close legacy link between the Bay Islands and Grand Cayman where seafaring has always been a tradition. In Utila the tradition continues today where fishing and lobstering are important contributors to the Bay Islands’ economy.

Maritime customs such as these made Andy Martin’s “Letter from Sea” a hit song in the Bay Islands of Utila, Roatan and Bonacca in the mid-70s. The salty tear-jerking ode can be still be heard today at most local bars, restaurants or nightclubs in the Bay Islands. “Letter from Sea” is considered by many mariners the unofficial seafarers’ anthem. In its first month of release the 45RPM vinyl single sold more than 20,000 copies between Honduras, Belize and San Andres.

There are several radio stations that air country music in Roatan, where Andy receives regular rotation of his music, which is another reason for his popularity in Honduras.

Though “The Cayman Cowboy” as he is known, has made several appearances in Roatan, they have always been in private “closed-door” type venues. The June performance will be open to the public and take place at Utila’s new Coral Beach Village which will be celebrating the Grand Opening of its new restaurant and bar. Backing Andy at his performance will be the Barefoot Man along with Sea ‘N B Band consisting of Mark McTaggart, Chuck and Barrie Quappe.

A public performance in Honduras has been a long time coming for Andy. Since his first appearance on their radio charts the offers to play have been many, but the dates and band’s availability just never fell into place until now. Large groups of Bay Islanders have travelled all the way to Port Arthur, Texas to hear Andy and Barefoot perform at the annual Cayman Night event which started some 30 years ago.

Cayman Airways and Sosa have weekly flights to La Ceiba, and from there Utila can be reached either by ferry, private plane or Sosa.
